The Shab-Al-Hiri Roach

darkmeditation:

This is the current tabletop rpg I’m setting up to run via video or voice chat. I’m just going to copy the description from the instruction manual

A quiet and very old New England institution, Pemberton University has a small, pleasantly dilapidated campus dominated by imposing stone buildings in neo-gothic style. The lamp of learning is tended by a small, pleasantly dilapidated faculty dominated by a witches brew of power-hungry sycophants, misanthropic crackpots, and scheming administrators.

Ancient oaks line the flagstone walks, filtering wan sunlight above the Big Men in their coon-skin coats and the pretty sorority sisters who adore them (Pemberton, modern in all the right ways, is co-educational). The University isn’t very close to anything noteworthy, and the community is insular – perhaps too insular.

Visitors should note that, with the exception of wine, all alcohol is strictly forbidden from the campus. By long-held tradition, wine is offered at every meal, and those who would disparage this practice need look no further than the Holy Bible for the justification of this healthful practice. “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake”, said Paul the Apostle to Timothy. And no less an authority than the late Louis Pasteur said, “Wine is the most healthful and most hygienic of beverages”.

As noted above, Pemberton’s motto is Sapientia stellarum nos conservabit - “Starry Wisdom shall save us”.

CONCERNING THE ROACH

The people of the Euphrates valley called it Num Saþar Rá - Insect/Mouth/Overseer - a monster from the dawn of civilization. It is a foul remnant of an evil time, when crawling things used men as cattle to erect a culture devoted to servicing their unspeakable needs. It has slept for four thousand years, and now it has been shaken awake by a foolish scientist. Gravid with egg sacs, the Roach seeks out the moist places of the human body and soul and takes up festering, malignant residence.

The Roach has perfected the art of effective control over human beings, but it is a little out of touch. It continues to operate in the Sumerian mode – issuing brutal, cryptic commands and treating its hosts like ignorant cattle. The modern world is not Sumeria, however, and the Roach’s hosts are not as tractable as the servants of the ancient God-Kings.

The Roach wants to get its bearings, stretch its oily legs, and spread its horrible brood across the twentieth century. The Pemberton University campus is a good start. In the conniving, power-hungry faculty, it has found something it recognizes at last.

Ultimately, it’s no different from roleplaying here, just in a sort of AU setting.

Now, for the goal. Again, copying from the manual:

OVERVIEW

The goal of the Shab-al-Hiri Roach is to accumulate Reputation. The player with the highest Reputation at game’s end - who is not controlled by the Roach - wins. To be perfectly clear - if you are Roach-bound at game end, you have failed and cannot claim victory.

The game takes place over the course of the fall semester in 1919. Play hinges around six Events, each of which will feature scenes framed by each of the player characters. Before each Event, players draw cards that will guide their actions – either the implacable commands of the Roach or prompts for social maneuvering within the incestuous hothouse of campus politics.

Now if THAT doesn’t sound interesting, I don’t know what is! Come on, it really is fun!

So come on, people! Let me know if you’re interested! Shoot me a message here on Tumblr in my ask box or my submit. Or even on Skype, if you have my info!

Dick’s look was wry. It was easy to take Raven’s friendship for granted because she was so selfless in it. Despite knowing her for years, Dick still felt like he hardly knew her at all. At least not in the same way he knew Donna or Roy. Raven kept to herself in a way that he could respect. He was raised by Batman after all.

"Thanks for being so accommodating," Dick said before going with a serious upturn. "What about you, though, Rae? You don’t let us fuss over you half as much as you do over us. How’ve you been?”

Raven sighed, though not out of irritation. She’d expected a comment or two along those lines. It was the same whenever Wally would visit her as well. “I’m doing quite well, actually,” she replied. “I’m finally getting to work on that book I always said I would write, and I still patrol most nights.”

She finished up with the stitches and secured the end before stashing the needle back into the first aid kit. “I know I really should let others help out more, but you know how I am.” As she rose from the couch again, to return the box to it’s closet, she chuckled lightheartedly. “After all, the last time I had the flu it took Kory nearly two days to convince me to let her cook me dinner.” By now, Raven had made her way back into the living room. “Would you like a drink? I’ve got a bottle of wine left from my birthday, or I could brew some tea.”

Dick didn’t have much of a comeback to that. He slid an antiseptic wipe over his forearm, drawing away some of the red. Really, it wasn’t that bad. He just had a hard time giving his wounds the proper time to heal.

"You’re not going to hold that against me, are you?" he asked with a tone of levity. He felt like Raven was getting grumpy with him. "I just don’t like you taking that pain into yourself." Which was true, Dick was a little uncomfortable about that. Closer to the issue, though, it hadn’t worked out well for her in the past, not with Trigon’s influence dragging her down at the same time. Dick figured it was better to not risk her powers unless it was necessary.

Of course she wouldn’t, Raven had never once thought that about any of her teammates. “I understand the concern,” she replied with a faint smile, her eyes connecting with his. “You know I aim to keep those around me comfortable, so I have no qualms with stitching you up the old fashioned way.”

The needle was threaded by now, and she began working at the few stitches. “Though you will be happy to know that I’ve gotten a bit stronger with that nowadays.”

noonesslave:

The woman reached out to Raven, her fingers brushing over one cheek. She knew that Raven was very conservative with touch but this was one occasion that she might allow a more intimate touch.

"I know, Raven." She smiled. "And thank you for caring so much for me but I want you to relax." It was her body, yes, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t comfort Raven - who seemed much more worried about it than Kory did. She was nervous and if it turned out that she was pregnant, she would have to tell Dick, but she wouldn’t have to rearrange her life very much to fit a child into it.

Raven nodded, agreeing with the idea of calming down. She wasn’t quite sure why she was so worked up. “We’ll get this sorted out in no time,” she eventually replied with a soft smile. Raven motioned to the scan bed. “Just lay back, and we’ll run through the basics again.”
